You Are Not Allowed To Take A Nap!

Today’s sermon might be a long one, so fasten your seat belt and get ready to read.

I left off a little piece or should I say a large chunk of information in last week’s post.

I did more of a one-size-fits-all remedy for insomnia and if I recall correctly, I told you to try and determine where you fall in, so we can address each individually. No wonder there was little or no feedback.

Hello….I am blind out here without your feedback. I cherish them. All your little nudges in the right direction has gone a long way in helping this sister out, so please keep it coming. Before my mouth runs away with me again. I want to do a quick shout out for the nudge I got to consider posting all our intense conversations on a blog. Thank you for ruining my BIG surprise. However I must say that is confirmation that I am headed in the right direction. Thank you once again.

Before I embark on the journey to mend the error of my ways, let’s digress for just five seconds. I want to tell you a story. It is called “The Hut”

**************

The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed everishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements and to store his few possessions.

One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, and soon there was nothing left. The worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger.

“God, how could you do this to me?” he cried.

Early the next day he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island. It had come to rescue him.

“How did you know I was here?” asked the weary man of his rescuers.

“We saw your smoke signal,” they replied.

It’s easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn’t lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain, and suffering.

Remember this the next time your “hut” seems to be burning to the ground.

It just may be a smoke signal that summons the grace of God.
***************************

This story inspired and motivated this past week and I just thought to share.

Okay now let’s get back to serious business.

I need to do a quick disclaimer. If you are in the category of people that suffer from either middle or terminal insomnia, you have my permission to ignore my order and skip nap time.

Now that the air is clear, let’s roll.

The first on my list is Initial Insomnia. I didn’t get a lot of enquiries about this type of insomnia, but not the less I MUST address. If you fall in this category. Last week’s prescription still holds
Initial Insomnia is basically when you cannot fall asleep. Which is often caused by hectic days and increased stimulation of the brain during the day and sometimes late into the night. This makes it difficult to shut down and relax at night.

For you to attack this head-on, leave work at work. I had someone admit that he had doubts about my suggestion. How about you try to prove me wrong. Try this and see how it affects your night’s sleep.

  • Pick a day just one where you do not carry work home.
  • Take a warm bath.
  • On a piece of paper, write out all the challenges, fears and concerns of that day and the next.
  • Just before you lie down on your bed, rub some lavender oil on the soles of your feet.

And DO NOT EAT at least 3 hours before bed time. Food is great but your system is forced to stay awake when you eat and jump right into bed. If you are hungry drink water or take some chamomile tea and hit the bed.
In the case of Middle Insomnia, one keeps waking up at night with your mind racing and your heart beating really fast. It’s been found out that a few issues may predispose one to middle insomnia.

Ask yourself these questions

  1. Do I have any allergies?
  2. Am I currently on any medications (insomnia is a side effect of some medications)
  3. Am I experiencing any joint pains? (Certain individuals managing arthritis experience pain at night)

Once none of these issues are contributing to the defect, you can attempt the steps below

  • Spraying your room with lavender sprays may help in getting you back to sleep as well as rubbing the lavender oil on your feet.
  • During the day avoid taking naps.
  • Please DO NOT have heated discussions just before bed time.
  • A good exercise at least 5 hours before bedtime is essential
  • Please, please and double please. Whatever you do, try NOT to take sleeping pills because you will have to wake up in less than 3 hours and you will be groggy and grumpy all day.

For Terminal Insomnia, this is most complained about, waking up at an unusually early time and finding it difficult to go back to sleep.

First I need you to establish that you are not a short sleeper. Short sleepers wake up really early and are not tired during the day. So if you find out that you are an early riser and you can go through your day without getting tired, I doubt you’ve got terminal insomnia.

Next establish that you do not have any allergies that are triggered by weather change or start in the early hours of the morning.

Long story, short, you will need to observe your sleep pattern. What times you wake up and are unable to sleep, write down your observations in your diary. Over time you will be able to point out exactly what may be the trigger for your sleeplessness.

For those in this category;

  • Have a sleep routine. (Now I know this is tough but you have to do it) Sleep at a particular time.
  • There will be absolutely NO napping during the day.
  • Also in your sleep diary write down any thoughts or worries that may be troubling you.
  • Make a 10 min exercise part of your daily schedule and do this at least 5 hours before bed time.
  • Stay away from tobacco, coffee and any caffeinated drinks.
  • Make nutritional supplements, vegetables and fruits part of your daily routine.
  • Apart from chamomile, lavender and mint which help in relaxing the nerves. Valera has also been found to be helpful….the challenge however is finding supplements that contain it in the right proportion.

And that will be all for today. Every problem has a remedy and you can get the good night’s sleep you need and deserve.

Have a great weekend folks…it’s the doctor speaking.
Bye!
