So what is list building?

List building is the process of adding new subscribers to your mailing list. The subscriber gives you their email address in exchange for receiving information, a special offer, or a free gift. You can do this online via your website, or you can do it offline using manual or automated data collection strategies. There are various strategies you can use to increase how fast you build your list, and how large your mailing lists end up being.

So, why would you want to build your mailing list?

Simple, because the more people you have on your list, you can email them whenever necessary. The thing is a potential client who feels like they know you are more likely to do business with you.

When emailing is done correctly, all of these things lead to more business and better client relations. Amongst the many reasons why you should include list building into your client acquisition strategy, these are the most paramount:

Email is Personal – Email allows you to land into a user’s inbox. There is no ranking system limiting your reach. Your message is intended for a user and it lands into their inbox. It is very direct, personal, and non-intrusive.

Email is Purposeful – To get your emails, a user needs to sign up and confirm their email address. Someone doing this much work is obviously already interested in hearing from you and is much more receptive and responsive to your message.

Email is Targeted – As we mentioned earlier the user has already shown interest in your products/content. They have already given consent to learn more by receiving your emails. They are much more likely to click, buy, and spread the word around for your services. Since you already know what they like, you can deliver them highly relevant content and offers to get better results.

Email is One-on-One – People read email in the privacy of their inbox. The message doesn’t feel so ‘public.’ They can ask you questions directly in private with confidence. You’d be surprised how many people don’t want to ask questions on public forums where everyone can read them. Email also allows users to build a one-on-one relationship with you. Gradually they develop trust in your brand and proudly spread the word around.

As well as knowing what list building is, you also need to bear in mind a few other things:

  • Offer something of value.
  • Treat email addresses as valuable.
  • Remember that email is a personal communication i.e you are sending messages to real people, not just email addresses.

Building your list is not a one-hit activity. When you consider that clients are the lifeblood of any business and email marketing, done right, is a cost-effective way of getting business. It’s something you should work on every week.
