THE PLUM LINE – LAW FIRM COLLABORATION

Collaboration is a fiber of the digital age business fabric. In a global marketplace climate where boundaries separating geographies and industries are melting like glaciers and technological advances are enabling new delivery models to transcend traditional divides, collaboration is essential for competitiveness. The plum line – law firm collaboration is what makes the difference in the digital age of stiff competition.

Law firms are in the midst of a remote working revolution. As a direct result of social distancing requirements and stay-at-home orders, interactions have been dramatically altered, impacting both the office setting and productivity of working professionals. This is especially true in the legal profession, where technology that connects staff members to each other and to clients virtually has become an absolute necessity.

True multidisciplinary collaboration requires people to combine their perspectives and expertise and tailor them to the clients’ needs such that the outcome is more than the sum of the participating individuals’ knowledge. Collaboration occurs when knowledge workers integrate their individual expertise in order to deliver high-quality outcomes on complex issues.

Yet as the industry shifts toward software dependence, many legal professionals continue to rely solely on antiquated communication methods — like phone calls and emails — to stay in touch with stakeholders of their cases.

Foreseeable trends show that firms that take care of their clients by providing them with a range of cross-functional services in more than one practice area are likely to have stronger and more meaningful relationships with them.

Firms supplying deeper and more varied value to their clients are more likely to do so because they have multiple personal connections at different levels, in comparison to the law firm that provides a shallower service from just one lawyer or a single practice.
