Coronavirus: Second Order Consequences – This Changes A Lot Of Things

Coronavirus (COVID-19) has reached pandemic levels and the entire global economy has been affected. The business disruptions from the outbreak cannot be underestimated.

In my opinion, the world as we know it has changed. Long after the virus is put under control, we will find out that it has brought changes especially to the work place. This will cause innovations on how to be better prepared for any other pandemic that might disrupt human to human interactions especially work place interactions.

The health implications of the pandemic are the first order consequences. Beyond this are second order consequences that are affecting different business, organizations and people worldwide. Law firms are not spared of the first and second order consequences of the pandemic. In countries most hit by the virus, some firms have had to shut down and work from home. Imagine a law firm that is yet to catch on with 21st century innovation like

  • a paperless law firm
  • a smart office using technology to work productively and securely from outside the office

compared to a law firm that can access all its documents, interact with team members, have meetings and access all their research resources remotely.

This epidemic serves also as a litmus test for businesses in strategizing or prioritizing how to mitigate second order consequences.
